Progressive Education:

Pedagogy Built on Experience

Progressive Education describes a pedagogy that uses the child and her experience as the starting point for teaching and learning. Drawing on knowledge of child development combined with a focus on the culture and community of the school, progressive educators create classrooms that encourage collaboration and critical thinking built on rich experience and engagement with the world. Field trips, children's literature and hands-on materials replace standard textbooks; play and projects replace work sheets and memorization. Progressive teachers are taught to be astute observers, basing assessments on what they see rather than on standardized testing and constant written examinations.
